Party

Another birthday party today, this time for 3 year old Jake (and 30 year old Katie):

There was a pinata transformer, and always mom-made cake, lots of babies. We absolutely have to have a pregnant lady around, its crucial tradition, and maybe Greg took one or two naps. Possibly.

Cousins, Siblings, Family-mash

Yesterday, I picked up Nathan from my sisters. Just Nathan, for cousin hang-outs.

They have a 4 month difference, which was HUGE a couple of months ago, but now they are just a few steps, and teeth apart. They bump heads, and steal each other's toys, but I don't monitor their play as much as with Jacob, because they're on a level together and I think this is where they can start to learn how to 'work things out', a basic social concept that unfortunately some people never learn.
My cousin Pete is pretty much exactly a year younger than I am. We had a lot of adventures together, especially when our family moved from the city, to the suburbs, around the corner from each other, Peter was one of my only friends at first, and for a while. I don't have any real brothers, but I had Pete. I hope Olive will have Nathan and Jacob. For adventuring with.

It was a lot of fun. I haven't really felt like I've gotten to know Nathan. This year's been packed with meeting Olive, and sometimes he's very much overshadowed by Jacob's talking, he's mysterious. A real younger sibling. Accepting of the division of attention, 80/20, what he's always known; life has been +Jacob. Its interesting that you're shaped by your unavoidable 'placement' as a first, or second, only or last, one of many. Who would I be without being pressed in the middle of my Morgan-Charlotte sandwich?

Our Hallowe'en

We had sooooo many people in our house yesterday, just to celebrate. I don't know what's come over me in the past years, I didn't used to really like Hallowe'en, but now I LOVE it. I realised its because Hallowe'en is a holiday where there is no pressure to be with your family, to observe the same traditions, there is no pressure to be miserable. There's no pressure at all. You can, if you like, shut the porch lights and pretend its not there. You can do whatever you like. You can sew your costume 3 weeks prior and eagerly wait for the day. Make-up on before breakfast.

We had 9 carved pumpkins. 12 people. Gave out treats, ate a very autumn supper together. Brought Olive and Sebastian around the block for their first trick or treats with Jake and Nathan. When everyone left and Olive went to sleep, Greg and I took advantage of having Pamela as a guest and went out to a potluck where we missed the food but were just in time for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So much fun, just the way a holiday should be.

A One Year Old

Today we had a little celebration for Nathan's 1st birthday. It was just Morgan, Sam, and I for the adults, along with our flock; from oldest to youngest; Jade, Kevin, Haley, Jacob, Nathan, Olive, and Jonathan. We had fun, and balloons, and cake!

Lessons in Sharing

Some pictures form our adventure-walk we had on Friday, with Morgan and her gang, down the canal and back.

Quite a task, but worth it. I think I took a looooong nap when we got home, but I cannot remember, possibly because I was sleeping. That's Jacob wearing Olive's, condom, I mean hat on his head. He's a weirdo. Olive and Nathan can both now crawl, and notice each other, and also steal key-sets from each other, and sunglasses, and toys, and... Lessons in sharing.
