There's something that I've been hearing a lot lately, here and there, that's really been bugging me, and that is the association of minimalism as the antithesis of hoarding. The two seem to be of note lately from shows like TLC's Hoarding:buried alive and A&E's Hoarders, while minimalism seems popular for various reasons, which I get, because who wouldn't want to simplify their lives? What bothers me, and makes me wish that people wouldn't associate the two, is that minimalism is NOT the opposite of hoarding. Minimalism is a lifestyle choice while hoarding is a psychological disorder usually triggered by a traumatic event. People hoarding suffer, and an everyday person with a lot of stuff, the normal things that most people have, are not hoarding, they can choose to get rid of things often, and most people do, while a hoarder cannot.
I think associating the two things in this manner cushions the reality, and eliminates understanding for people dealing with a hoarding problem.
